Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow

The Research Fellow / Senior Research fellow position is a 3 year appointment and the successful candidate will join the centre's team to take a leading role in initiating and developing research projects within the centre's research programme. Applicants shall have a PhD in Machine Translation or a closely related discipline (e.g. Machine Learning, Computational Linguistics, Text Analytics, Natural Language Processing) and shall ideally have already established an international track record and reputation in the area of Machine Translation (MT) and/or related language technologies (e.g. Machine Learning, Computational Linguistics, Text Analytics and Natural Language Processing). Applicants for a Research Fellow position shall normally have a minimum of 4 years postdoctoral research experience and those applying for a Senior Research Fellow position shall normally have 6 years relevant postdoctoral research experience.

The successful candidate will work with CNGL's Principal Investigators (PIs) to take a leading role in establishing and managing research projects in the area of Machine Translation within the CNGL research programme; will contribute toward the continued growth of our Machine Translation research by securing new research funding and executing new research programmes and, in conjunction with CNGL’s PIs, co-lead (and eventually lead) research teams.

An appointment will be made at the level of Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate, in line with DCU’s Research Career Framework.

Postdoctoral Researchers

Appointments for Postdoctoral Researchers are for up to 2 years in length. We are seeking Postdoctoral Researchers (and Research Fellows) with a background in Computational Linguistics, including, but not limited to, Machine Translation, Text Analytics, Parsing, Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing.

As such, we are interested in hearing from a wide range of applicants from a variety of backgrounds, focused around MT and related technologies (e.g. Machine Learning, Computational Linguistics, Text Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Parsing, Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing). Applicants will be considered for a number of available positions, including those offered as part of currently funded and upcoming European FP7 projects.

Applicants for the position of Postdoctoral Researcher must have a PhD in a relevant discipline, i.e. Natural Language Processing/Computational Linguistics (e.g. Machine Translation, Text Analytics, Parsing, Information Retrieval etc.). Applicants for a Research Fellow position shall normally have a minimum of 4 years additional postdoctoral research experience.

The successful candidates will conduct a conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of the Principal Investigator (which may include work plans as specified within European FP7 projects), will assist in identifying and developing future research and funding initiatives and will supervise and assist undergraduate and postgraduate students working in this area with their research. For candidates appointed at the Research Fellow level greater contribution will be required in relation to managing and administering research projects, publications and their impact and an international and national contribution to their field of research.

Research Engineer

The Research Engineer position is a 15 month contract for which we are seeking candidates with strong computer engineering and design skills, to work on a number of cutting-edge research projects. Ideally, applicants will hold an MSc in Computer Science/Software Engineering (or equivalent industry experience i.e. 3+ years) with experience in Natural Language Processing, Machine Translation, Artificial Intelligence, Localisation etc. highly advantageous. Experience with research-based software development in one or more of these areas is also highly preferred.

Candidates will have strong programming skills, with excellent knowledge of one or more of Java, C++, PHP; will be comfortable working in both UNIX and Windows environments; will have excellent algorithmic and analytic skills; and ideally will have familiarity with existing data resources and tools such as Moses toolkit, Apertium, BLEU/MERT, POS taggers, Parsers, Wordnet, NLTK, SVMLight, Weka and similar tools. Knowledge of cloud/grid computing and experience working with Amazon EC2, Windows Azure or Google App Engine would be a distinct advantage.

The successful candidate will work closely within our team of researchers and with other partners developing new and maintaining current research systems and applications in the area of language technology, including prototype and demonstrator systems, and will influence all aspects of both the research and development process.

Postdoctoral Researcher - Information Retrieval (32 Month Contract)

We are seeking a Postdoctoral level Researcher to work in the area of cross-language information retrieval. This position will focus on technology and system evaluation, algorithm development and human-computer interaction methods to support to crosslanguage information access in the Khresmoi project.

Suitable candidates will have doctoral or equivalent level experiences of evaluation and algorithmic techniques in information retrieval or user search information needs. Applied R&D role - IR/QA

The Project:
We are looking for a research scientist for a new industry-focused project which involves building a question-answering application for use in real-world commercial environments. This presents an exciting opportunity to apply research technology to create a novel QA application that will go live over the course of the project, working in a small focused team within a large and energetic research centre with significant international standing.

The Role:
This is a key role where the successful candidate will take the lead in information retrieval research as well as play a leading role in the design and development of the system architecture. They will work closely with NLP researchers, developers and end users to deliver a fast, high-precision application. This is a great opportunity to take on a varied, hands-on role and influence all aspects of the research and development of the application, from text mining, search engine customisation and experimentation with results reranking techniques, to user interface design and integration with social media applications.

We are looking for an “all-rounder”, someone with a genuine interest in good design and the ability to transform cutting edge research into practical applications. Candidates must have core excellence in a given area and be comfortable working in a start-up style environment, adapting quickly to evolving requirements and eager to learn new things.

Required:
-PhD in computer science or equivalent work experience
-experience with rapid prototyping and system design and integration.
-excellent programming skills (especially in java, python/perl).
-proven track record in an IR related field
-experience with an IR system

Bonus:
- experience with: Solr/Lucene, UIMA/GATE, Hadoop, Amazon EC2.
- experience in question-answering, machine learning.

The Research Centre:
The National Centre for Language Technology (http://www.nclt.dcu.ie/) is Ireland's foremost centre for statistical natural language processing with over 40 researchers. It is based in the School of Computing in Dublin City University. The Centre carries out basic and applied research in the areas of machine translation, cross-language information retrieval, spoken document retrieval, natural language parsing, question answering, sentiment analysis, speech recognition and speech synthesis. The Centre is affiliated with the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (http://www.cngl.ie/), a dynamic Academia-Industry partnership with over 100 researchers.

Details:
The initial contract is for 15 months which, following a successful outcome for the project, may lead to an opportunity to play an important role in the further commercialisation of the product.

Salary: EUR 40,000 - 46,500 per annum depending on experience.
