How to Secure the Connection
When using open wireless networks, for example at conferences, there is the risk that somebody eavesdrops on your password and/or the documents you read. In case of passwords, they can then gain access to e-mail accounts, servers, intranets, etc. that use the same password.
- If you have VPN technology on your laptop, please use it to connect securily to the network of your home university or company. Note that some VPNs protect only selected services. For example, the VPN for staff in School of Computing, DCU, does only re-route packages going to certain IP addresses.
- If you can use PuTTY or SSH to login to a machine in your home university or company and if there is a HTTP proxy server available, please use an SSH tunnel to the proxy server (click here).
- Copy these instructions in advance. Though attackers most likely only eavesdrop and analyse the collected communication, an attacker specifically targeting the CNGL internal web space could manipulate this information in order to trick you into using an insecure method.
