Primary and second level teachers have the opportunity to work in a CNGL research centre (DCU, UCD, TCD or UL) for 6-8 weeks during the summer. The intern works closely on a project with a research team. The aim of the
internship is that the teacher can bring their expertise to the project and bring something tangible back to the classroom.
Example: A teacher tested and evaluated a content-free authoring tool with a researcher, populated the tool with appropriate teaching content and used it back in their classroom.
CNGL Courses @CTYI in 2010
CNGL runs courses for students in the CTYI programme. Courses we have run in the past include
Arabic Language and Culture, Japanese Language, Culturally Localising Web Pages and Computers and Animation. We
will advertise the Summer 2010 courses shortly.
“Primary School Toolkit”
CNGL is developing a Primary School Localisation Toolkit, a
game that allows children to develop an
appreciation of cultural and linguistic diversity. The toolkit aims to help
primary school students and teachers to overcome obstacles resulting
from diversity and to learn about languages and cultures.
The Localisation Research Centre (LRC) has been
conducting research into intercultural education in Primary
Schools and has been in discussion with members of the
Curriculum Design Unit (CDU) at Mary Immaculate College
(MIC) in Limerick in order to ensure that the tool kit
complements the current primary school curriculum.
The toolkit fits in with Chapter 7
of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment’s
guidelines for “intercultural education in the primary
school” and will also integrate Content and Language
Integrated Learning (CLIL). In this way, the toolkit is useful, not just for native Irish students, but also
for students who have migrated to Ireland from other
countries.
