DCLRS Seminar Series, CNGL and NCLT
Seminar Series
The DCLRS seminar series, an international seminar series
in computational linguistics, runs every Friday. DCLRS was
hosted in DCU in 2007/8 and is hosted in TCD for 2008/9.
The CNGL/National Centre for Language Technology
(NCLT) seminar series takes place in DCU on Wednesdays.
Both seminar series are aimed at CNGL, NCLT and other
researchers and developers interested in language
technologies. The seminars have approx. 30 attendees
every week. A full list of speakers/presentations is the CNGL annual report.
The seminars are advertised on the website and via email each week.
Tutorials and Workshops
CNGL have run a number of tutorials and workshops in
2008 aimed at our researchers. If the topic is relevant to
people outside of CNGL, we have invited other groups to
participate in these: e.g. 10 members of the CLARITY CSET
attended a CNGL workshop on graph-based mining of
digital content. AA full list of speakers/presentations is the CNGL annual report.
Research Skills for Graduate Students
Prof. Julie Carson-Berndsen (UCD) organised a research
skills course for graduate students within the School
of Computer Science and Informatics in UCD as a pilot
programme last semester. Two CNGL students took
the course. The course is based on online materials and
supplementary workshops. Prof. Carson-Berndsen is rolling
it out across UCD this year and we are going to tailor it to
CNGL graduate students.
Joint ICT-CSET Thesis award
CNGL are involved in a joint ICT-CSET Computer Science
thesis award with the CLARITY, CTVR, DERI and Lero
CSETs. The award will be given to the thesis that has made
the most significant contribution to its field - whether
computer science, software engineering or software
related area. The winner will receive a prize of €2,500.
CNGL are holding an internal competition to pick a Ph.D.
thesis to represent CNGL in the joint ICT-CSET competition.
All CNGL Post-Doctoral researchers, who had submitted
their thesis in 2008, were eligible. The overall winner will
be chosen in March 2009.
There are regular work package meetings, track area
meetings and demonstrator workshops. CNGL have
a regular Centre Management meeting every Tuesday
as well as:
o A bi-annual Scientific, Commercialisation and
full CNGL meeting (Spring and Autumn)
o An integration and IP committee every two
months
o An executive and E&O committee every three
months
Internal and External Professional
Development
Both CNGL staff and students take part in
professional development activities in their host
universities. The courses encompass orientation, library
skills, research skills, entrepreneurship development,
commercialisation and intellectual property management.
These courses are run by the human resources
departments, the various research and innovation
units and CNGL. These courses help our students and
researchers to acquire skills and knowledge for both
personal development and career advancement. A full
list of professional development activities is given in the
appendix.
