Hadoop Hackathon
CNGL is hosting a Hadoop Hackathon on the weekend of 10th / 11th March 2012 in DCU.
The Hadoop (http://hadoop.apache.org/) Hackathon will consist of two days of group work, using Map Reduce and working on Natural language problems.
Miles Osbourne from Edinburgh University will facilitate the event.
There will be a short overview of Hadoop followed by some tutorial drills - enough to understand basic details like how to run jobs, use the file system etc. The bulk of the time will be spend on project work.
No prior knowledge of Hadoop is necessary. However, participants should be comfortable at programming and know their way around a unix/linux operating system. There won't be one particular language used (the groups decide what language(s) they want to program in).
Participants can choose from two different projects. Each project uses Hadoop to solve a natural language processing problem.
Groups will be largely self-directed, but can call upon the organisers for help.
The projects are:
- Distributed discriminative supervised machine learning.
http://conferences.inf.ed.ac.uk/hadoop11/projects/p5.html - Finding useful information in a sea of garbage
http://conferences.inf.ed.ac.uk/hadoop11/projects/p6.html
Material:
- Running Hadoop Jobs at DCU [PDF 76 KiB]
The course will start at 09:30 and continue until 17:00 each day.
Refreshments for coffee breaks and a light lunch will be provided over the two day course.
Please contact Cara Greene (cgreene (AT) computing.dcu.ie) know if you would like to register for the event.
