Conferences
Members of CNGL have attended, exhibited at and given
presentations at international conferences (including
COLING 08, ACL 08, SIGIR 08, LISA 08 and CLEF 08) to
raise the profile of CNGL. A full list of the conferences we
exhibited at is given in the appendix.
The CNGL booth at COLING 2008: The 22nd International
Conference on Computational Linguistics, held in
Manchester, England.
LRC 13th Annual Internationalisation and
Localisation Conference
The 13th Internationalisation and Localisation Conference
organised by the LRC, took place on 2nd-3rd October 2008
at the Marino Institute of Education in Drumcondra,
Dublin, Ireland with the first Think Tank meeting on the
pre-conference day, taking place in Dublin on 1st October.
The theme of the conference was Localisation4All, and the
conference focused on the provision of quality localisation
services for people world-wide. The conference was
attended by 90+ participants.
The conference was sponsored by the Centre for Next
Generation Localisation (CNGL) and was officially opened
by Josef van Genabith, Director of the CNGL. In addition
the event featured specific CNGL sections covering the
centre's four research areas which were introduced by Prof.
Vincent Wade, Prof. Andy Way and Prof. Reinhard Schaler.
VII LRC Summer School, 29th July-1st August 2008
The CNGL supported, through UL, the VII LRC Summer
School, held at UL in co-operation with The Institute of
Localisation Professionals (TILP). The summer school was
open to Masters and Ph.D. students as well as people from
industry and undergraduate students. Thirteen attendants
became Certified Localisation Professionals (CLP), Level 1.
The programme was also supported by CNGL industry partners
SDL, Alchemy Software Development and SDL Passolo.
Localisation Research Centre (LRC) Best Scholar
Award
In 2008, the CNGL co-sponsored the 6th Best Localisation
Scholar Award, together with Cont[text]. The LRC awards
are the most valuable and longest established academic
awards in localisation. The winner was Ana Guerberof,
Arenas for Productivity and quality in the post-editing
of outputs from translation memories and machine
translation, supervised by Prof. Anthony Pym, Ph.D.
program in Translation and Intercultural Studies, Universitat
Rovira I Virgili, Spain. CNGL will again be supporting the
2009 Awards.
Localisation Focus, the International Journal of
Localisation
Localisation Focus, The International Journal of Localisation
is co-sponsored by CNGL. Two issues have been produced
by the Localisation Research Centre (LRC) in 2008 and
both had SFI and Centre for Next Generation Localisation
(CNGL) branding prominently displayed on the cover.
The first issue was distributed to approximately 400
subscribers and was also sent to libraries world-wide. Issues
were also distributed at industry events such as the LRC
XII - Localisation4All (8th-12th December 2008 Dublin),
Localization World (9th-11th June 2008 Berlin, Germany &
13th-15th October 2008 Madison, USA) and Translating and
the Computer 30 (27th-28th November London, UK)
The second issue is in the final stages of production and
will be sent out in February 2009, and distributed at
2009 localisation-relevant Industry events. The third issue
will focus on CNGL research and will be published in the
second half of 2009.
CLP Programme
CNGL, through UL, supported The Institute of Localisation
Professional (TILP) in its efforts to develop Level 2 of its
Certified Localisation Professional (CLP) programme. TILP
with the support of the LRC organised 11 courses in 9
countries, with 88 professionals being certified during
summer 2008. In 2009, similar support is planned for the
development of level 3 courses.
